For approximately four years as a contractor and three months as a resident of Oakland, I’ve had the opportunity to work with unsung heroes in the city of Oakland. Our overarching theme here is to reduce the violence and increase the peace through recreation as a vehicle for this change. What tools do we need to make this happen, will we need love? will we need trust? will we need respect? Certainly, each of these principles, virtues and values depending on your perspective are important to building powerful relationships.
In Oakland like many other urban settings nationwide you have an abundance of ideas, concepts and programs which we kn wop work with no level of uncertainty. What I’m learning is that you must understand the politics, the people, the places and the preexisting programs before offering up your own perspective on either of these elements. The following photos and audio tracks provide a brief summary which citizens speak about loved ones whom have lost their lives violently. A violent death at an early age is not an admission of involvement in criminal behavior nor does it determine ones guilt or innocence, it simply states a life gone too soon in terms of modern day life expectancy. Though this blog I hope to have you continue to share your best work for youth workers and acknowledge those whom have come before us.
Shout out to James King- shut da door, Rivers Robinson- silent giant, “Captain of Prince Georges County – inventor of Midnight Basketball, James Hampton – the ultimate coach, Bryan Hayes – top flight security, Patsy Grayson-brave heart, Robert Lewis Jr. – The original street-worker, Herbye White – the manager, Mickey Fearn the – Recreational Regent, Horace Houston – wosdom keeper and on and on and on … add to the names….
Please review our work, place your comments and tell us what you’re doing to reduce violence and increase the peace.
